Experts by Experience
Our Experts By Experience (EBE) network is a team of people with lived experience dedicated to changing and improving the systems they have been through in the past.
To enable socially excluded people to regain control of their lives, discover a sense of purpose; empower them through education, training and wellbeing; create a supportive community that can showcase their talents and skills to transform the stigma and stereotype that pervades their lives; and to inform other sectors, employers and local communities about people with multiple and complex needs to bring about fundamental change in what is often an uncompromising world.
Fulfilling Lives Newcastle and Gateshead puts people with lived experience at the heart of its programme and planning. We give service users a voice and opportunity to help those with multiple and complex needs lead a stable and happy life.
Our Experts by Experience (EBE) network promotes and supports our work towards system change across Newcastle and Gateshead and has strong links with local service user involvement groups. Most recently, the Experts have contributed to the Gateshead Homeless Health Needs Audit and Commissioning Consultation; using their unique experience to inform the way services will operate in the future.
Our EBE members host a range of events throughout the week ranging from: drop-ins and community lunches to fishing trips and many more. The weekly activities promote healthy wellbeing; helping to aid the recovery process. There’s a welcoming social environment, allowing people with experience of using services to inform the development of the very same services for future users.
We offer educational and training opportunities such as the Fulfilling Lives accredited Peer Researcher training and The Freedom Programme for women who’ve experienced Domestic Abuse, which is delivered by one of our Experts.
The network also offers opportunities for people who feel ready to move on and build on their skills, experience and interests by becoming a Volunteer Navigator. Volunteer Navigators offer a point of contact and peer support to people with multiple and complex needs. Working alongside our Service Navigators they accompany them on social activities with the people they support, sometimes visiting them in prison or hospital if appropriate. The Volunteer Navigators stay in touch to make sure things are okay; reaching out to people and trying to connect them with the wider community when they feel ready to do so.
